From Compressed Craig to Foot Freedom: Why I Finally Gave My Head a Wobble 👣
If you have spent any time working on a site or in the trades, you will know exactly what I am talking about when I mention "boot dread." For years, I was a groundworker, which meant my feet were shoved into heavy, narrow steel toe caps for at least ten hours a day. Whether it was the British rain or just the sweat from a long shift, my feet were almost always damp, cramped, and completely neglected.
Back then, I was the walking definition of "Compressed Craig." My toes were squashed together so tightly that they had basically forgotten how to move independently. But the real struggle was the constant, frustrating cycle of athlete's foot. No matter how many creams I bought or how often I changed my socks, the fungus just kept coming back. I didn't realise it at the time, but I was basically forcing my feet to live in a dark, damp, narrow cave every single day.
The Turning Point
Everything changed when I finally stopped listening to "how things have always been done" and started looking at the actual anatomy of my feet. I realised that my boots weren't protecting my feet; they were suffocating them.
The transition to barefoot shoes wasn't just about comfort for me. It was about reclaiming my health. By switching to footwear with a proper, wide toe box and using merino toe socks to keep my skin dry, I fixed a decade of fungal issues in a matter of months. I haven't had a single bout of athlete's foot since I made the switch, and my feet are stronger and more capable than they have ever been.
I often say that I wish I could go back a few years and give my head a wobble. I spent so much time in pain and discomfort because I didn't think there was another way.
